Windows 8.1 Preview and Unity3D 4.2 crashing

August 19, 2013 Leave a comment

I have been enjoying working with Unity 3D on my Windows 8 machine.  I decided to put it on my other machine that is Windows 8.1 Preview.  I was able to install it without a problem but the moment that I tried to run the application it crashed.  I did a little searching on the Unity forums and came across the following suggestion:

1. Go to where Unity is installed. In my machine the location is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Unity\Editor\
2. Next type is the following into a command prompt and hit enter:

Unity.exe -force-d3d11

3. There you go, you should be good to go. I am not sure as to why this works but I am happy that I can at least access my projects from either machines.

Hope this helps!

Windows 8.1 Preview Explorer.exe crashes

August 19, 2013 Leave a comment

I have been playing with and enjoying quite a bit Windows 8.1 Preview. The only caveat is that I pretty much can not use Windows Explorer. Every time I try and launch Windows Explorer, it opens quickly and then crashes. It doesn’t matter if I try and right click on my task bar on the Windows Explorer icon and select a different option.

Well thankfully there is a fix. At least this fix works for me and it might for you as well. Here are the steps required:

1. Right-click on your desktop and create a new text file.
2. Rename the text file to “import.txt”
3. Open the text file and enter in the following information:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Blocked]

4. Rename the file from “import.txt” to “import.reg”. (You will get prompted for changing the file extension.)
5. Double-click on the “import.reg” file and let it execute in the registry.

That should do it! You should now have a happy Explorer window and be able to function normally.

Hope this helps….
